About Roberta
My name is Roberta Koscielski and I have been the Branch Librarian at the Lakeview Branch of the Peoria Public Library since 1984. In 1985, I became a volunteer tutor with the adult literacy program at Common Place. Since then, Peoria Public Library and Common Place have worked together on many projects. We began the Let's Connect Book Club in 1999. We choose books to read based on what the adult learners like and with other tie-in projects in mind. For example, for the past three years, the Let's Connect Book Club has read and discussed the Peoria Reads! selection. In 2002, we read A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J Gaines. Since the book is so long, we took three months of our book club to discuss it. We got to meet Mr Gaines and his wife after we read the book. Last year we read The Reappearance of Sam Webber and got to meet the author Jonathon Scott Fuqua. Earlier this year, we read The Speed of Light. The author, Elizabeth Rosner, came from Berkeley California and talked about her book with us.
Favorite Subject to Teach
Math
I teach the Count On Us! math class on Thursday mornings at Common Place. Most of the adult learners who are in the Let's Connect Book Club are also in our math class. We have fun learning about fractions, decimals, percents, and word problems!
Favorite Sport
Bowling
When I'm not at the library or Common Place, I like to bowl in leagues and tournaments. Each year I travel to the national women's bowling tournament in fun places like Reno or Fort Lauderdale. Even I don't bowl well at the tournaments, there's always shopping and sightseeing!
