A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines
My Name is Mia Crowder
My favorite book is A Lesson Before Dying. You can't put the book down. You have to read the book through to the end. It is the best book I have ever read. I got to read to the author. I got to cook for the author and his wife. The whole experience was wonderful. I have been in the Let's Connect Book Club for 5 years. I love to be in the Book Club.
Mia's book review of the Reappearance of Sam Webber by Jonathon Scott Fuqua
Between his eleventh and twelfth birthday, Sam grew up in many ways. Sam didn't want to move because his neighborhood was clean and nice. But he had to move because his father had left him and his mother. When he and his mother moved to their new neighborhood, they moved into a rowhouse. Ditch helped Sam and his mother move into their new neighborhood. Ditch helped to clean their backyard. Sam found a swastika on the door of a downstairs apartment. In Sam's new school, there was a bully named Newt Novacek. He didn't like Sam because Sam was little. Sam confronted Ditch about racism and his use of the "n" word.
About My Math Class
I love working with Roberta (Koscielski). She is the greatest math teacher. She helps me to learn about fractions. I did not like fractions, but she encouraged me to work with fractions. I love going to Common Place on Thursday mornings to see Roberta. She has a great smile!. I would like to thank her for being my teacher and my friend. She makes my day all the time. She makes the class fun. I would like to thank her for volunteering her time to teach me math. She makes me feel so grate when I see her.

Mia's comments about the award
"I came to Common Place to work on my skills in math and reading. It was hard, but I did it. It was important that I improved my reading because I'm a diabetic and I need to know what I can eat and not eat. I love to go to Common Place because the people there are like family and make learning fun"
A Testimony About Mia written by her Niece Aliyah Crowder
I love my aunt. She loves me back. I love going to Common Place because I have lots of friends there, like Dawn, Judy, Carol Turbett, Pam and lots more. My aunt takes me to the Mall. She takes me riding on the buses. My cousins come over sometimes to play with me. My aunt takes very good care of me. I love her very, very, very much. Dawn is my very best friend. Sometimes I get mad at her but she is still me best friend. Pam used to be at Common Place, but she moved to a new job in Macomb. I miss her a lot. I also have a lot of other friends like Brianna AJ, Malcom, David, and Jeremy.
